Depending on the time of year, the sun might set while you are out fishing on Munsungun Lake, or long after you have had dinner and are relaxing on your porch.

Back in 1890 or so, Wil Atkins set about finding a spot for his new sporting camp. He came up the Arroostook River and decided Munsungan Lake would make a great spot. There were plenty of fish in the lake, and plenty of wild game around to keep his sports happy.

But where on Munsungan would be the right spot?

It is clear today that he knoew what he was doing when he chose the Norway Brook inlet site for Atkin's Camps (now Bradford Camps). There was a year round supply of fresh running water, a large flat esker area for the cabins (which proved very dry and bug free) a fresh breeze from the two prevailing wind directions (south and northwest) and a chance for a spectacular sunset every night.

Thank you Wil Atkins!

Sikorsky history at Bradford Camps

Karen and I own and run the Bradford Camps. We operate the camps from the spring ice out in May through the deer hunting season in November. We are centered in the middle of The North Maine Woods on Munsungan Lake, a 1500-acre pristine deep-water lake. Wild trout and salmon are caught in the lake and numerous outlying ponds and streams provide excellent fly fishing opportunities.

My attraction to Maine's woods started when I was a boy, spending summers at Cobb's Pierce Pond Camps in Western Maine. I spent all of my childhood summers at Wilderness Bound, the boys camp, and then went on to help at the Cobb's Sporting Camps nearby. My lifelong dream to make the sporting camp my carreer started at the age of ten.

Karen and I met in 1985 and our first vacation together was the summer of 1986, a two-week canoe trip down the Allagash River. I could tell by her enjoyment of the trip, even with its physical demands and weather hardships, that "my dream" could become "our dream". And so it has. Because of Bradford Camps and because of Karen there are many days each year that I consider myself the luckiest man alive.

Igor Sikorsky, III

Bradford Camps

Bradford Camps

The first blog entered for this site.
